GEORG GRAEWE: Mass und Ausmass

„……stilistisch ganz anders am Klavier: Georg Graewe. Man kann sich seinem Solospiel auch so nähern, indem an sagt, was er alles nicht tut. Er schleudert keine Zitate, er versorgt uns nicht mit einer unübersichtlichen Notenflut, er präpariert das Klavier nicht, zupft nicht im Bauch des Instruments herum und trommelt nicht auf dem Rahmen.
Er setzt sich hin und beginnt kommentarlos zu spielen. Und das ziemlich gut. Er setzt die Töne mit Bedacht, kontrastiert die Höhen, lässt die Ideen kommen und gehen, verdichtet und entwirrt, rast dahin und entschleunigt, immer mit Mass und Ziel, immer zur richtigen Zeit, ist immer glaubhaft und authentisch. Wenn es genug ist, hört er einfach auf, ohne dramatischen Schlussakkord, ein kurzer Lauf nach oben und Schluss. Grossartig.“

„What distinguishes Graewe is his remarkable control, a focused urgency making his compositions/improvisations feel twice as dense. The way his hands tumble across the keys and over each other should make it inevitable that his fingers would get twisted up like Bugs Bunny playing Liszt, yet there is never a moment of anything other than perfect articulation. This is complemented/contrasted by an unusual rhythmic sense in some sections, almost a drunken lurch approaching proto-stride. And when he plays slow passages, the loveliness is highlighted by his seeming to wait until the absolute last possible millisecond to play a note.“
