Celebrating the Journal Violone - A tribute to the music and life of Barre Philipps

Am 28 Dezember 2024 verstarb Barre Philipps im Alter von 90 Jahren in Las Cruces, New Mexiko.

Philipps, der als einer der einflussreichsten, wenn nicht als der bedeutendste Kontrabassist des Modern Creative und der zeitgenössischen Improvisationsmusik gilt, hinterlässt ein beachtliches Oeuvre, welches auch zukünftige Generationen von Improvisator*innen nachhaltig beeinflussen wird.

Phillips zog 1962 nach New York, nachdem er Romanistik an der Berkeley University studiert hatte. Dort nahm er Kontrabassunterricht bei Frederick Zimmermann und trat 1963 in Gunther Schullers Third-Stream-Projekt mit Eric Dolphy in der Carnegie Hall auf. Zudem spielte er als Solist unter Leonard Bernstein ein Konzert von Larry Austin mit den New Yorker Philharmonikern ein. Ab 1964 war er Mitglied von Jimmy Giuffres Trio und tourte mit George Russells Sextett erstmals durch Europa. Bis 1967 arbeitete er auch mit Attila Zoller und Archie Shepp.

1967 ließ sich Phillips dauerhaft in Europa nieder. Er spielte 1969 in einem Orchesterprojekt mit John Lennon und Yoko Ono sowie mit Mike Westbrook. Danach folgten Engagements mit Rolf Kühn, Michel Portal, Joachim Kühn und insbesondere mit dem stilprägenden The Trio (mit John Surman und Stu Martin). Von 1972 bis 2021 lebte er im südfranzösischen Puget-Ville. In den 1980er Jahren leitete er eigene Gruppen, darunter ein Trio mit Paul McCandless und Theo Jörgensmann (1985). Er arbeitete zudem mit Accroche Note, Derek Bailey, Gunter Hampel, Jeanne Lee sowie Barry Guys London Jazz Composers Orchestra (bis 1995). In den 1990er Jahren nahm er mit Ornette Coleman, Franz Koglmann und Evan Parker auf.

Sein Album "Journal Violone" (1968) gilt als erstes Solo-Bassalbum im Jazz. 1971 spielte er mit Dave Holland das erste Kontrabass-Duo-Album ein. Weitere prägende Projekte waren seine Zusammenarbeit mit Pauline Oliveros, Aufnahmen mit Bertram Turetzky sowie das Kontrabass-Quartett "After You Gone".

In seiner langen und intensiven Karriere war Philipps mehrfach zu Gast im Loft und hat auch so mehrere Generationen von bedeutenden Kölner Bassist*innen einflussreich geprägt und auf deren künstlerisches Schaffen eingewirkt.
Gemeinsam huldigen sie an diesem Abend einem grossartigen Künstler und inspirierenden Menschen.

On December 28, 2024, Barre Philipps passed away at the age of 90 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Phillips, who is considered one of the most influential, if not the most important double bassist of modern creative and contemporary improvisational music, leaves behind a remarkable oeuvre that will have a lasting influence on future generations of improvisers.Phillips moved to New York in 1962 after studying Romance studies at Berkeley University. There he took double bass lessons with Frederick Zimmermann and performed in Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream project with Eric Dolphy at Carnegie Hall in 1963. He also recorded a concerto by Larry Austin with the New York Philharmonic as a soloist under Leonard Bernstein. From 1964, he was a member of Jimmy Giuffre’s trio and toured Europe for the first time with George Russell’s sextet. He also worked with Attila Zoller and Archie Shepp until 1967.

Phillips settled permanently in Europe in 1967. In 1969, he played in an orchestral project with John Lennon and Yoko Ono as well as with Mike Westbrook. This was followed by engagements with Rolf Kühn, Michel Portal, Joachim Kühn and, in particular, with the style-defining The Trio (with John Surman and Stu Martin). From 1972 to 2021 he lived in Puget-Ville in the south of France. In the 1980s, he led his own groups, including a trio with Paul McCandless and Theo Jörgensmann (1985). He also worked with Accroche Note, Derek Bailey, Gunter Hampel, Jeanne Lee and Barry Guy’s London Jazz Composers Orchestra (until 1995). In the 1990s he recorded with Ornette Coleman, Franz Koglmann and Evan Parker.

His album Journal Violone (1968) is considered the first solo bass album in jazz. In 1971, he recorded the first double bass duo album with Dave Holland. Other influential projects included his collaboration with Pauline Oliveros, recordings with Bertram Turetzky and the double bass quartet After You Gone.

In his long and intensive career, Philipps has been a guest at LOFT several times and has influenced several generations of important Cologne bassists and had an impact on their artistic work.
Together, they pay homage to a great artist and inspiring person on this evening.
