JLR3: Jan Lukas Roßmüller Trio | Release Konzert

Kommunikation und Feingespür als künstlerische Reaktion auf die Gegenwart – auf dem ersten Album seines neuen Trios bildet Pianist Jan Lukas Roßmüller mit Bassist Florian Herzog und Schlagzeuger Jakob Görris ein Klanggefüge, das durch eine Vielzahl kleiner Kanäle kommuniziert, Ideen austauscht und weiterspinnt. Kontinuierliche motivische Entwicklung in Komposition und Improvisation bilden den roten Faden. Ausgehend von Roßmüllers Stücken erschafft das Trio vielschichtige Welten, die von zerbrechlicher Weite bis zu explosiver rhythmischer Verdichtung reichen. Dabei hält das Trio die Balance zwischen abstrakter Eindrücklichkeit und melodischer Nahbarkeit.

Die drei Akteure kennen sich aus der jungen, vorwärtsgerichteten Kölner Jazz- und Improszene und bewegen sich ebenso souverän in experimenteller Klangsprache wie in lyrischen, kammermusikalisch feinen Texturen. So entsteht Musik, die filigran aber kräftig ist.
Schon Roßmüllers erstes Klaviertrio Erdung wurde als „in der Tradition des Formats geerdet und mit Abstraktion gespickt“ (Jan Kobrzinowski, Jazzthetik) beschrieben. Auch das Nachfolgeprojekt JLR3 vereint Jazzimprovisation mit einer Klangsprache aus moderner europäischer Musiktradition und schöpft aus einer rhythmischen Stilvielfalt von modern interpretiertem Swing bis zu komplexen, überlagerten Beats.

„Meine Musik muss immer ein großes freies Moment haben.“ In dieser Dringlichkeit ist der Kölner Pianist und Komponist Jan Lukas Roßmüller Teil einer jungen, vorwärts gerichteten Strömung zwischen zeitgenössischem Jazz und freier Improvisation: kompromisslos und offen. Zu seinen Einflüssen zählen Jazzikonen wie Thelonious Monk oder Carla und Paul Bley ebenso wie zeitgenössische Klaviermusik und elektronische Musik.
Mit dem elektronischen Duo Book of Ra (Debut Album 2021 bei Unit Records) erzeugt er „digitale Funkparks“ (WDR). Seine Kompositionen waren zuletzt auch im Trio Erdung zu hören, einem „mit Abstraktion gespickten und in der Tradition des Formates geerdeten“ Klaviertrio (Jan Kobrzinowski, Jazzthetik). Mit der Band RGR spielt er frei improvisierte Musik mit „neue(n) Koordinaten für das uralte Thema Schönheit“ (Wolf Kampmann, Jazzthetik). Das Debut Album Octopetala erschien im März 2024 bei Boomslang Records und war 2025 in der Kategorie Newcomer:in des Jahres für den Deutschen Jazzpreis nominiert. Jan Lukas Roßmüller war während des Studiums an der HfMT Köln Teil des Förderprogramms des Yehudi Menuhin Live Musik Now e.V. und wurde u.a. beim Osnabrücker Study Up Award, beim Förderpreis des Domicil Dortmund und beim Recording Project des LOFTs in Köln ausgezeichnet. Nach der Teilnahme an der Akademie concerto21 war er im Frühjahr 2024 Wohnstipendiat im Elbehaus der Alfred-Töpfer-Stiftung in Hamburg, 2025 Composer in Residence beim Schweizer Label UNIT Records.


Die Konzerte im LOFT beginnen in der Regel gegen 20 Uhr - das LOFT öffnet jeweils um 19.30 Uhr.
Ausnahmen in der Winterzeit - zB an Sonntagen - sind möglich.

Communication and sensitivity as an artistic response to the present – on the first album by his new trio, pianist Jan Lukas Roßmüller, bassist Florian Herzog, and drummer Jakob Görris create a sound structure that communicates through a multitude of small channels, exchanging and developing ideas. Continuous motivic development in composition and improvisation form the common thread. Based on Roßmüller’s pieces, the trio creates multi-layered worlds that range from fragile expansiveness to explosive rhythmic density. In doing so, the trio maintains a balance between abstract impressiveness and melodic accessibility.
The three musicians know each other from the young, forward-looking Cologne jazz and improv scene and are equally at home in experimental sound language as in lyrical, chamber music-like textures. The result is music that is delicate yet powerful.
Roßmüller’s first piano trio, Erdung, was described as “grounded in the tradition of the format and peppered with abstraction” (Jan Kobrzinowski, Jazzthetik). The follow-up project, JLR3, also combines jazz improvisation with a sound language from the modern European music tradition and draws on a rhythmic variety of styles ranging from modern interpretations of swing to complex, layered beats.

“My music must always have a great sense of freedom.” With this urgency, Cologne-based pianist and composer Jan Lukas Roßmüller is part of a young, forward-looking movement between contemporary jazz and free improvisation: uncompromising and open. His influences include jazz icons such as Thelonious Monk and Carla and Paul Bley, as well as contemporary piano music and electronic music.

With the electronic duo Book of Ra (debut album 2021 on Unit Records), he creates “digital funk parks” (WDR). His compositions were most recently heard in the trio Erdung, a piano trio “peppered with abstraction and grounded in the tradition of the format” (Jan Kobrzinowski, Jazzthetik). With the band RGR, he plays freely improvised music with “new coordinates for the ancient theme of beauty” (Wolf Kampmann, Jazzthetik). The debut album Octopetala was released in March 2024 on Boomslang Records and was nominated for the German Jazz Award in 2025 in the category Newcomer of the Year. While studying at the HfMT Cologne, Jan Lukas Roßmüller was part of the Yehudi Menuhin Live Musik Now e.V. support program and received awards from the Osnabrück Study Up Award, the Domicil Dortmund sponsorship award, and the LOFT recording project in Cologne, among others. rAfter participating in the concerto21 academy, he was a residential scholarship holder at the Alfred Töpfer Foundation’s Elbehaus in Hamburg in the spring of 2024 and composer in residence at the Swiss label UNIT Records in 2025.
